Starting a refugium is pretty simple, but choosing the right plants and fauna to start your refugium can be difficult. AlgaeBarn’s Ultimate Refugium Starter Packages include everything from nitrifying bacteria, phytoplankton, copepods, and macroalgae. By systematically adding these components to a new or established refugium can set you up a low maintenance reef tank that has sustainable populations of copepods.  All the components will be delivered in a single shipment and for a new tank it does require about a week to implement every step, but with established aquariums, everything can be added simultaneously.

Instructions:

We only recommend adding all items at once into an established tank. If you are starting a new tank, add the Pods, Phyto, and Sea Lettuce a minimum of 5 days after the nitrifying bacteria for best results.

 

New Aquarium Instructions

 

1. Start by rinsing the MarinePure blocks with fresh water until it runs clear through the blocks without any fines or residues. They can be added to the refugium/sump/overflow area. 

2. Turn off your aquarium’s skimmer (if applicable) and add the entire contents of the TurboStart Nitrifying Bacteria to a high-flow area. This will introduce and establish the beneficial bacterial colonies necessary to cycle your tank and also make it safe to introduce the copepods, phytoplankton, and macroalgae. A small amount of fish food should be added to the tank to provide a food source (ammonia) for the nitrifying bacteria, allowing them to multiply and “cycle” the tank.

3. After 5 days, add the live Sea Lettuce to a refugium with an adequate light source. 

4. Remove filter socks or any other mechanical filtration, and add then entire contents of the 5280 pods to the refugium area. 

5. Begin daily dosing of OceanMagik Live Phytoplankton at a rate of 5mL for every 20 gallons of water your system holds. Store any unused OceanMagik in the refrigerator and it is good for up to 4 weeks when stored properly.

 

Established Aquarium Instructions
